On November 15, 1907, Hamed Abdel Fattah Gohar aka Hamed Gohar was born in Cairo. He attended the Islamic Charitable Society School for his elementary education and the Royal Intermediate School for his secondary school, where he earned his baccalaureate degree in 1925. He lived his life for the sea and was not married. Gohar first enrolled at Cairo University’s Faculty of Medicine, but after achieving great success in the first year of study, he decided to switch to the Faculty of Sciences.
He submitted his first master’s thesis in 1931, two years after receiving his degree, with the topic “Micro anatomy and histology of the endocrine glands in the rabbit.” In Egypt and the Arab world, Gohar started the first extensive study project on ocean studies.
He started his study on Xenia, or soft corals of the Red Sea, in 1931, and it was completed in 1939. Gohar received a D.Sc. from Cambridge for his arduous eight-year study of the soft corals in Hurghada, which is regarded as the highest honour available to unsupervised research.
Career
Hamed Gohar started the first comprehensive study of marine studies in Egypt and the Arab world over sixty years ago. The Hurghada marine life station’s management was handed up to Hamed Gohar. He founded a marine museum with plants and animals from the Red Sea collections. In 1970, he served as the Arab League’s science and technology advisor.
International contribution
He was a member of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) advisory committee. He was appointed to lead the Committee for the Disposal of Nuclear Waste in the Deep Sea by the International Atomic Energy Agency in 1959. He had a well-known weekly television programme called The world of the seas that aired on Friday and ran for 18 years. In it, he used to show films about different marine creatures while commenting on the image and introducing the various factions, their habits, and their qualities.
