Pavel Zacha Biography

Zacha was born on 6 April 1997. His journey to the NHL began when he played in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments in 2009 and 2010 with his minor ice hockey team from Chomutov. It was there that Zacha’s talent on the ice was first noticed, setting him on the path to a career in professional hockey.

Zacha made his Czech Extraliga debut playing with HC Bílí Tygři Liberec during the 2013-14 Czech Extraliga season. From there, he was drafted first overall by the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in the 2014 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft. He joined the Sting for the 2014-15 season and recorded 34 points in 37 games. The following season, Zacha recorded 64 points in 51 games and was awarded the title of best penalty-killer in the Western Conference by OHL coaches.

During his time in the OHL, Zacha also competed in the IIHF World Junior Championship with the Czech Republic in 2014, 2015, and 2016. His performance in these tournaments further established his reputation as a skilled player and caught the attention of NHL scouts.

In 2015, Zacha was ranked eighth for North American skaters by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau for the NHL Entry Draft. He was selected sixth overall by the New Jersey Devils, and shortly after, signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the team. After returning to the Sting for the 2015-16 season, Zacha made his NHL debut on April 9, 2016, recording two assists in a 5-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Zacha continued to make strides in his NHL career. He made the Devils’ lineup for the 2016-17 season and scored his first NHL goal on November 3, 2016, in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers. He finished the season with eight goals and 24 points in 70 games.

However, in the 2018-19 season, Zacha struggled to produce offensively, going pointless in ten games. As a result, he was assigned to the Binghamton Devils of the American Hockey League (AHL) in November 2018. Despite this setback, Zacha bounced back and signed a three-year extension with the Devils in September 2019.

During the 2019-20 season, Zacha recorded 32 points, a personal NHL career high, proving that he was a valuable asset to the Devils. However, on July 13, 2022, Zacha was traded by the Devils to the Boston Bruins in exchange for Erik Haula. Fortunately for Zacha, he avoided arbitration with the Bruins and was later signed to a one-year, $3.5 million contract for the 2022-23 season on August 8, 2022. On January 14, 2023, Zacha was signed to a four-year contract extension by the Bruins, further solidifying his place in the NHL.
