Mexican Gothic is what’s on everyone’s minds. The upcoming drama series, that’s being produced by Kelly Ripa and her husband, Mark Consuelos, is based on a bestselling thriller novel by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. After the book drew attention for its interesting plotline of a girl trying to save her newlywed cousin, the duo acquired the rights to make the horror novel into an intriguing tale for television. But what exactly is Mexican Gothic about?
According to Kelly, who recommended the book to her Instagram followers, it’s “the literary jackpot.” Silvia writes of a girl named Noemí Taboada who ventures to the Mexican countryside and the mountains of Hidalgo in the ’50s after receiving a frantic letter in the mail from her cousin. Although she’s not cut out for rescuing anyone, Noemí is a tough and smart individual who does not scare easily.
But as she travels deeper into the countryside, the protagonist starts to realize there’s a bunch of things she doesn’t know like her family’s secrets. It’s “sublime horror for your summer reading,” Kelly said of the book on Instagram. “[It’s] so good I bought the hard copy and the download to read in the dark.”
Silvia’s masterpiece is currently under development at Hulu. She’s been announced as an executive producer along with ABC Signature Kelly and Mark’s production company, Milojo Productions.
“I am excited to see the novel come to life and to meet the talented, diverse crew and cast members that will take us on this journey,” Silvia, who is also the best-selling author of Gods of Jade and Shadow, Certain Dark Things, Untamed Shore, and Signal to Noise, gushed.
Although it will take some time for the series to be made, Hulu said they “cannot wait to bring Silvia’s gorgeous writing to life.”
Mexican Gothic sounds like the perfect book to turn into a TV show! If it’s anything like Mark and Kelly’s old projects then we’re in for a real treat. The couple worked together on Riverdale and in 2017, they started developing the book Geek Girl Rising: Inside the Sisterhood Shaking Up Tech into a TV show. Looks like they have a lot on their plate!
