Israel Houghton spent his formative years in a Hispanic neighborhood in Phoenix, Arizona, alongside his three half-siblings. Due to his bi-racial background, being the only black individual in an interracial family led him to grapple with issues of identity and diversity.

Much of his solace during these times came from music, as he began playing drums at church from the age of five. His musical journey continued when his family moved to New Mexico at the age of 13, leading him to learn guitar and subsequently embark on full-time work within church music.

At 19, he left college to pursue a career in worship ministry. In 1995, Houghton formed New Breed Ministries alongside his wife, enlisting the talents of several renowned musicians and singers who also served as ministers. Two years later, he released his debut album, “Whisper It Loud”, marking the official beginning of his music career.

Over the following years, Houghton released 11 more solo and group albums, achieving significant popularity and amassing a considerable fan base. His albums “Jesus At The Center”, “Power Of One”, and “New Seasons” gained widespread commercial success, contributing to his growing net worth.

Houghton’s music, characterized by a fusion of reggae, jazz, rock, and gospel styles, has transcended cultural, generational, and denominational boundaries, drawing people of different races, ages, and cultures together through worship.

Aside from his singing career, Houghton has collaborated with and produced records for other artists. Notably, in 2003, his production of Michael Gungor’s album “Bigger Than My Imagination” brought him into the national spotlight.

Houghton, also the National Director of Music and Worship for Champions for Christ, is a regular worship leader at Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas.

In his personal life, Houghton has been married twice. He was initially married to Meleasa Houghton in 1994, with whom he has three children. Following their divorce in 2016, he married singer, actress, and television personality Adrienne Bailon later in the same year.
