A past competitor on The Amazing Race, Don St. Claire, has passed away. He was 87.

According to his son Greg, St. Claire passed away at his house in Angels Camp, California, after collapsing and experiencing what his family believes to have been a cardiac problem.

The former participant in the Amazing Race raced alongside his wife, Mary Jean, in Season 6 back in 2004. The so-called “grandparents” finished seventh overall after being eliminated fourth in Berlin. Don, who was 69 years old, was one of the show’s oldest contestants ever.

Outside of reality television, St. Claire was a well-known physician in Northern California, where he spent 40 years working in Palo Alto.

The couple talked about their passion of adventure and travel during the auditioning process for the show; by the time of their season, they had visited six continents. The pair almost escaped death during one of their trips to the South Pacific when a boat capsized, throwing Don onto a coral reef and Mary Jean into the ocean. Locals arranged an untimely memorial service for the couple because they thought they had died.

Don and Mary Jean each had six children from prior marriages, totaling 16 grandkids.
